- Sports are very important to the English. Whether playing in the park with friends and family, going to see a game, or watching on television the British are always surrounding themselves with sports. Many of England's rivals in sports are Scotland, Ireland, and Australia. There are also many leagues within England that are rivals to themselves.

- Football (soccer):
- Football is the most common sport in England. Children learn to love this sport from a very early age and continue to follow it throughout their lives.
- The first official game of Football in England was in 1863, in London. However the sport has been played since the 1500s in school and parks.
- Today there are 20 premier football leagues in England and thousands of club teams
- There are 2 major football competitions in England:
- The FA Cup
- The Carling Cup, formally known as the League Cup.
- The National English team won the World Cup in 1966 however they have not won the Cup since
- Cricket:
- Was first invented in England in the 16th century.
- Cricket is like baseball and is played all over the world.
- There is a world series and many other tournament played all over the world.
- While football is more popular cricket matches can be seen all over Europe, Australia, and throughout southern Africa.
- Rugby:
- Rugby started in the 19th century as a take off of the sport football.
- In 1871 Rugby football became an official sport.
- Today there is a a national Rugby football league and almost every country has a league.
- During the 1990's Rugby was classified as a working class sport and had a bad reputation. Today with the professional leagues and athletes Rugby is very popular all throughout England.
